BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven announced today that North Dakota has received the “Special Achievements in GIS” award from ESRI Inc., a leading vendor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is a system of hardware, software, data, people and applications used to analyze data and create maps. For example, GIS can be used to map the location of floods and the affected houses or roads. North Dakota was one of 150 chosen from 100,000 ESRI software sites around the world.

“This award speaks well of our state agencies working together to construct a system that encourages sharing resources and incorporating cost saving efficiencies,” Hoeven said. “At the same time, the award recognizes our efforts to strengthen our state’s emergency management infrastructure.”

This award was given in recognition of the work that is being done by the State GIS Technical Committee, which is composed of the Department of Transportation, Department of Health, State Water Commission, Parks and Recreation, Information Technology Department, Geological Survey, Game and Fish, and the Department of Commerce. The agencies within the GIS Technical Committee are pooling their time, talent, and data to construct the State GIS “Hub,” a centralized store of valuable state GIS data.

The State GIS Hub is the result of funding received from the State Legislature. Additional funding has come from a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency working through the North Dakota Division of Emergency Management as part of the Devils Lake risk assessment project.

The primary goal of the State GIS Hub is to reduce cost. With the GIS Hub, state agencies can now share hardware, software, and data. With the GIS Hub, the agencies can develop their own GIS systems, leveraging the State GIS Hub. GIS is increasingly used for emergency management and homeland security.
