Hoeven: North Dakota Receives $399,219 In Firefighter Grants

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor Hoeven announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) have released $399,219 in grant funds to several rural North Dakota communities through the 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The award recipients for North Dakota are:

  • Beach Volunteer Fire Department: $31,569 for fire operations and safety
  • Pisek Rural Fire Protection District: $72,450 for a firefighting vehicle
  • Park River Rural Fire Protection District: $171,000 for a firefighting vehicle
  • Garrison Fire Department: $36,000 for fire operations and firefighter safety
  • Ryder-Makoti Fire Department: $88,200 for a firefighting vehicle

"The severe wildfires of this summer highlight the need for enhanced firefighting capabilities and firefighter safety in North Dakota, especially in our rural communities,” Hoeven said. “We welcome these grants to assist our firefighters in the essential work they do for all of us.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is designed as a cooperation effort between FEMA and the U.S. Congress to enhance basic fire service delivery across the United States. More than 5,000 departments will receive over $360 million to support fire protection, Emergency Medical Services delivery, vehicle purchase and prevention programs in 2002.

USFA, part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, serves the American public and the nation’s fire services through training, data collection and analysis, public fire education and fire protection technology research.
