Hoeven Announces Firefighter Grants Totaling $165,632

BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) have released $165,632 in grant funds to several rural North Dakota communities through the 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The award recipients for North Dakota are:

  • Belfield Volunteer Fire Department: $58,496 for fire operations and firefighter safety
  • Inkster Rural Fire Protection District: $33,390 for a firefighting vehicle
  • Cando Fire Department: $34,884 for fire operations and firefighter safety
  • Munich Rural Fire Department: $38,862 for fire operations and firefighter safety

“These grants are especially important now because of the drought conditions and the potential for wildfires in the state,” Hoeven said. “The financial support will help our firefighters obtain the resources necessary in providing services to their communities.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is designed as a cooperation effort between FEMA and the U.S. Congress to enhance basic fire service delivery across the United States. More than 5,000 departments will receive over $360 million to support fire protection, Emergency Medical Services delivery, vehicle purchase and prevention programs in 2002.

USFA, part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, serves the American public and the nation’s fire services through training, data collection and analysis, public fire education and fire protection technology research.
