Hoeven: President To Appoint Former Governor Allen Olson To International Joint Commission
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today received notification from the White House that President George W. Bush intends to appoint former Governor Allen Olson to the International Joint Commission (IJC). Olson was governor of North Dakota between 1980 and 1984.
“This appointment is clearly important news for North Dakota,” Hoeven said. “Former Governor Olson knows the importance of water issues in North Dakota. I’ve spoken with both him and with the White House, and I’m certain he will be fair-minded in addressing our water issues involving Canada.”
The International Joint Commission is designed to prevent and resolve water disputes between the United States and Canada under the 1909 boundary Waters Treaty. The Commission evaluates applications for approval of projects affecting boundary or transboundary waters; it assists the two countries in the protection of the transboundary environment, including the implementation of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the improvement of transboundary air quality; and it alerts the governments to emerging issues along the boundary that may give rise to bilateral disputes.
