Hoeven Announces $2.2 Million Teacher Quality Enhancement Grant
BISMARCK, N.D. - Governor John Hoeven today announced receipt of a $2.2 million U.S. Department of Education Teacher Quality Enhancement grant. Hoeven said he expects total funding for the project to be approximately $6.6 million over three years.
“This funding will benefit our new teachers, and ultimately, our children,” Hoeven said. “Quality education is one of the pillars on which we are building our future in North Dakota, and this grant will help us to make North Dakota’s great schools and great teachers even better.”
The grant announced today will help North Dakota to begin the development of a performance-based licensure system by bringing K-12 content standards into line with teacher education standards; develop a mentoring program for beginning teachers within the first two years of their experience; and develop a portfolio-based assessment system for experienced teachers without a major in their content area.
The project will be overseen by the Governor’s Chief of Staff Bill Goetz and Director of the State Education Standards and Practices Board, Janet Welk, who will coordinate implementation of the project with the Department of Public Instruction.
The U.S. Department of Education Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants Program is designed to help states promote improvements in the quality of new teachers, with the ultimate goal of increasing student achievement in the nation’s pre- and K-12 school classrooms.
