Gov. Doug Burgum granted a request from the North Dakota Education Standards and Practices Board (ESPB) for emergency rulemaking to provide school districts with additional flexibility that will temporarily allow expanded use of student teachers to help address the state’s teacher shortage. Burgum also announced the future formation of a task force to address challenges in recruiting and retaining teachers.

Gov. Doug Burgum and the North Dakota National Guard’s adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Al Dohrmann, visited North Dakota National Guard soldiers serving along the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas, thanking them for their work to support efforts by state and federal officials to secure the border, stop illegal immigration and interdict drug and human trafficking.

Doug Burgum and First Lady Kathryn Burgum are inviting the general public to join them for Recovery Reinvented, an event dedicated to eliminating the shame and stigma of the disease of addiction, on Oct. 5 at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on the campus of Minot State University in Minot, N.D. The event will be free and open to the public.

Gov. Doug Burgum has appointed Southeast Judicial District Judge Cherie Clark and East Central Judicial District Judicial Referee Stephanie Hayden to two newly created judgeships in the East Central Judicial District, which is comprised of Cass, Steele and Traill counties.

Gov. Doug Burgum issued a statement after the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released proposed changes to how the U.S. government regulates onshore oil and gas leases on federal lands. The changes include increasing the minimum lease bond from $10,000 to $150,000, reducing the areas available for leasing, increasing the minimum bid amount from $2 to $10 per acre, and raising royalty rates.

Gov. Doug Burgum has directed all government agencies across the state to fly the United States and North Dakota flags at half-staff, and encourages North Dakotans to do the same at their homes and businesses, starting immediately today through sunset Saturday, July 22, in honor of Fargo Police Officer Jake Wallin, 23, who died in the line of duty Friday in a shooting incident that also seriously injured two fellow officers and a civilian.

Gov. Doug Burgum released the following statement regarding Friday’s incident in Fargo in which a Fargo Police Department officer died and two fellow officers sustained injuries and were in critical condition. A civilian also sustained serious injuries, and the suspect died as a result of the shooting, police said.
