Gov. Doug Burgum presented NASA astronaut James Buchli with the North Dakota Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, the state’s highest commendation for its citizens, highlighting his significant impact on aerospace and his trailblazing career as the first North Dakotan to fly in space.

Gov. Doug Burgum announced that NASA astronaut James Buchli will be presented with the North Dakota Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award during a ceremony July 30 at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

Gov. Doug Burgum appointed Greg Hoffman to lead the North Dakota Information Technology (NDIT) department as chief information officer (CIO), effective immediately, citing his strong leadership experience and deep knowledge of the agency’s vital role in state government.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Attorney General Drew Wrigley issued a joint statement applauding a U.S. Supreme Court opinion overturning the Chevron doctrine, which stemmed from a 1984 decision in Chevron vs. Natural Resources Defense Council that gave deference to federal agencies in interpreting laws passed by Congress and delegated to the agencies to administer.

Gov. Doug Burgum announced that North Dakota Highway Patrol Col. Brandon Solberg plans to retire from law enforcement Nov. 30 after nearly 6½ years as superintendent of the Highway Patrol. Solberg has accepted another position in state government as director of the Facility Management Division in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), effective Dec. 1.

Gov. Doug Burgum and First Lady Kathryn Burgum addressed attendees at the sixth Strengthening Government to Government (G2G) Conference, outlining the significant progress made on state-tribal relations during the past eight years and urging tribal leaders, government agencies and other stakeholders to continue building on that progress with the five sovereign tribal nations with whom North Dakota shares geography.

Gov. Doug Burgum has selected Brig. Gen. Mitchell R. Johnson to serve as the next adjutant general of the North Dakota National Guard and director of the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services, effective Sept. 15. Johnson will succeed Maj. Gen. Alan Dohrmann, who will retire after nearly nine years as adjutant general and more than 40 years of military service.

The agenda for the sixth Strengthening Government to Government (G2G) Conference on June 25-26 at the Bismarck Event Center has been finalized and registration remains open for the event. 

Gov. Doug Burgum has appointed human resources executive Donald “D.J.” Campbell of Mandan to a four-year term on the state Board of Higher Education starting July 1, and University of North Dakota student Maxwell Eriksrud to a one-year term as the board’s student member.
